‘The Tricky Issues of Sickness and Absence’

Earlier this month, Phillips Solicitors in association with HR Solutions 4U hosted a breakfast seminar to discuss ‘The Tricky Issues of Sickness and Absence’ at Chineham Business Park.

A good representation of HR professionals and business owners from companies across Hampshire were rewarded for their early start by hearing two informative and witty presentations by Alastair Hodge, an eminent employment barrister, and Laura Davis, Managing Director of HR Solutions 4U.

Laura Davis interspersed the serious points that she made about employers’ responsibilities with some hilarious real life examples given to companies as ‘reasons’ for not attending work due to sickness. These included the memorable example, ‘I’m suffering from pre-eclampsia’ – from a man!

Alastair Hodge discussed the key issues of employers' responsibilities under disability discrimination law and unfair dismissal on ill health grounds and gave case summaries highlighting the sometimes considerable costs to employers when sickness and absence issues are mishandled.

The future of fitness is here...freestyle training

Fitness First based on the Park in Spindlewood has created a new Freestyle area of the gym.

This new area has the latest training equipment configured in a space big enough to use it.

Think of it as an adult playground packed with the equipment to jump, leap, bend and twist your way to fitness. Rather than focusing on one single muscle group, Freestyle training gives you the freedom to mimic natural forms of movement in all directions.

It'll train your body for activities performed in everyday life so you'll perform better at work and at home. You'll improve your mobility, flexibility, balance and strength in all areas and decrease injuries and joint pain.

But above all, you'll have fun.

The freestyle zone will showcase the leading fitness tools in the industry, including:

    ViPR
    Suspension training
    Kettlebells
    Bosu balls
    Power bags
    Steelbells

And because they're in a dedicated area of the gym, you can easily see what's new and our team can quickly and simply demonstrate how to use them.

The Freestyle boards are full of useful tips on how to use the equipment plus a Freestyle six week training programme booklet containing six fun and varied workouts for your to try at your own pace will be available.

Real evidence of business success at Chineham Park

Against the continuing backdrop of economic uncertainty, companies at Chineham Park are demonstrating that, here in Hampshire, there is a strong trend of growth with the announcement of several major acquisitions.

Rupert Batho, managing director at MEPC Chineham Park, explains, "In just the last six months at Chineham Park, we have seen four major acquisitions amongst our customers. These deals are not limited to one sector and include digital printing, mobile communications, software development and engineering. As Hampshire's premier business destination for smart companies, this level of merger and acquisitions activity clearly shows that we have the best environment for securing success."

In May this year, one of world leaders in dynamic publishing, Quark bought MobileIQ. This acquisition gave the Mobile IQ team an opportunity to continue developing an innovative roadmap for publishers, while expanding the use of their technology into new markets, such as financial services, manufacturing, and government.

This deal was followed in June when Postjet was acquired by Domino Printing Sciences plc, a global coding and printing multi-national. According to Nigel Bond, Group Managing Director of Domino Printing Sciences plc: "The global postal market is large and while postal volumes are in decline there is still a significant opportunity to grow across a range of applications. Postjet has leading technology in the sector and will further strengthen Domino’s digital printing capability."

In July, Talaris, which is headquartered at Chineham Park, was bought by Japanese firm Glory in a $1 billion deal. Glory has stated that it intends to become the world’s top brand for money-handling machines and the purchase of the leading British business in the industry was major step towards achieving that aim.

Most recently, Tyco International Ltd has merged with Pentair to create a global leader in water and fluid solutions, equipment protection and thermal management. The new company has been structured to benefit from the ever increasing demands on energy, water, infrastructure and agriculture resulting from the growing population and wealth of the world.

Rupert adds, "Chineham Park is the common factor for all these deals. Our customers are succeeding on an international scale and, post purchase, are becoming major players across the globe in their specific industries."

Chineham Park Steps Up Their Beat

Community Beat Manager for Chineham, PC Jim Charlton, has recently completed his level two in British Sign Language (BSL) thanks to sponsorship from MEPC's Chineham Park.

After dealing with a case of harassment against two deaf people, Jim became interested in the deaf community and decided to learn BSL. Jim applied to be one of Hampshire Constabulary’s Police Link Officers for Deaf people (PLOD) in 2010 and completed his level one at Sonus in Southampton. The role of a PLOD is to ensure that deaf people have equal access to justice and the police service in general, and to act as a point of contact in the deaf community.

Jim said: “To become a PLOD it was essential to learn BSL. I passed level one in 2011 and decided to take the level two straight away so I didn’t forget what I had already learnt. The level two certificate helps develop vocabulary and focuses on the structure of your BSL, which is different to that of the English language.”

When Jim decided to take on the level two, he sent an email to all his contacts asking for sponsorship so that he was able to pay for the course. Richard Hawkes, Estate Manager at Chineham Park and Jim’s point of contact on the Park, suggested that Chineham Park could jointly fund Jims’ level two course, in partnership with Hampshire Constabulary.

Richard said: “Here at Chineham Park, we are always doing what we can to engage with the local community and help out where we can. When I saw Jim's email, I thought it would be a nice gesture to help with the course funds for him. We are always grateful for the work the Basingstoke and Hampshire police do in making a safer community.”

Since completing the BSL level two course, Jim has had to use his new skills a number of times, from dealing with parking disputes to taking crime reports.

Chineham Park donate 500 glasses to Naomi House

Chineham Park has donated 500 drinking glasses to children’s hospice Naomi House. The glasses were used in a photo shoot but no longer needed at Chineham Park.

Rupert Batho, Managing Director at MEPC Chineham Park, wanted to find a way to put them to good use. He says: “Once the glasses had fulfilled their purpose, I knew that they should not just be thrown away. As we have supported Naomi House in the past, we made contact to see if they would be put to good use there”.

Tina Starbuck, Corporate Fundraiser at Naomi House said: “We are always grateful for donations like this as it means our resources can be put to better use. The glasses are used regularly at the hospice and we are very thankful to Chineham Park for thinking of Naomi House. WE really appreciate the continuing support we receive from Rupert and his team. ”

Chineham Park Coach Takes SchoOlympians to the Starting Line

Earlier this month, four primary schools from Basingstoke, came together to take part in the SchoOlympics organised by Hampshire County Council.

The SchoOlympians were picked up from their school and taken to Popley Community Centre on the Chineham Park Coach that had been donated to them for the day.

The four schools; Winklebury Junior, Great Binfields Primary, Four Lanes Primary and Oakridge Junior, took part in an opening and closing ceremony with the main event focus on football, netball and rounders.

The community came together, with the local Tesco branch making a SchoOlympic torch, and with several Community Safety Patrol Officers on hand to help.

The Chineham Park Coach, which runs on chip fat fuel, and Chineham Park Coach driver, visited each school individually and transported the children to this fun sporting event. It returned at the end of the day to take them back to their schools in time for home time.

Robert Green, Team Leader of the Community Safety Patrol Officers, Hampshire County Council said: “We wanted to run an event that would bring the schools together. Being the Olympic year, we thought this would be a great opportunity for the four schools to take part in a school Olympic event.“

“As this was very much about the community coming together, we asked Chineham Park if we could use their Coach and they very kindly agreed. The Coach driver did an amazing job on the day, getting all the children to and from Popley Community Centre safely and on time.”

Richard Hawkes, Estate Manager for MEPC Chineham Park said: “Robert and the rest of his team work very hard with the communities in north Basingstoke, specifically with local schools. Donating our eco friendly Coach for the day to transport the schools to and from the SchoOlympics was an easy decision to make. At Chineham Park we are always looking for ways of engaging with the local community and providing help where we can.”

Market leading names such as Computer 2000, Micro-P, Cobham and Tridonic have all chosen to make Chineham Park their home bringing with them over 700 jobs. Their investment means that Chineham Park is busier now than at any time in its 25 year history."

Computer 2000 expands to Chineham Park as part of growth plan

Computer 2000, one of Basingstoke’s largest companies, has moved over 530 staff into their new offices at Chineham Park earlier this month. The global distributor of technology products is using Redwood 2, a 48,000 sq ft high quality office, to support their goal of sustainable growth.

Andy Dow, marketing director at Computer 2000 said "As a successful and expanding company the move to Redwood allows us to create the right culture and workplace to attract and retain the high quality staff that we need. We wanted to give our employees the best possible office environment to ensure that they enjoy their work and are successful in delivering in our growth. Chineham Park provides us with both the great offices and also an excellent suite of onsite amenities for the benefit of our existing and future staff."

With Computer 2000 committing to a ten year lease, Chineham Park has ensured that these 530 jobs stay within Basingstoke and reaffirms Chineham Park’s appeal to local, national and international companies.

Rupert Batho, managing director of Chineham Park, adds: "Attracting a global IT distributor to Chineham Park shows that our position as a leading technology hub within Hampshire and the South East is recognised around the world. The UK's fastest growing IT distributor grows again at Chineham Park

Micro-P Ltd, one of the oldest and largest distributors of IT and technology products in the UK market, has expanded again at MEPC Chineham Park, Basingstoke’s leading business location by taking an extra 6,000 sq ft. This new acquisition follows on from Micro-P's move last year to larger office premises to accommodate their 31% increase in staff.

Paul Bryan, Micro-P's Marketing Director explains, "Our successful growth strategy has accelerated the development of the company and we needed extra space to house our expanded Mobile and Telco Division. Chineham Park has been our home since 1991 and we knew that we could work with MEPC to stay on the Park. The obvious communication benefits which make this location perfect for our business are enhanced by the additional amenities for our staff on site."

Micro-P is one of the national leaders in a highly competitive industry which is constantly developing to improve the customer experience. The increased sq ft will host a mobility showroom demonstrating leading mobile & accessories manufacturer products such as Nokia, Samsung, Blackberry and Tech21.
Chineham Park Managing Director Rupert Batho adds: "Micro-P is one of the longest established businesses here at Chineham Park and in the past two years we have seen this customer expand by 31% and then again with this new building by a further 35%.
